David Buchbinder at Caplansky's Deli

On a beautiful spring Sunday Toronto afternoon, April 26/09, the David Buchbinder Trio played 2 sets upstairs at the Monarch Tavern, Caplansky's Deli.

David Buchbinder (trumpet/flugelhorn), playing world music and jazz since 1987, is best known for his Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band .

Being able to eat Zane Caplansky's delicious home-made smoked meat sandwiches while listening to live sophisticated klezmer/jazz in a warm and intimate room made for an unforgettable experience. The family oriented audience was roused to rhythmic clapping and dancing on more than one occasion.

The room emptied a little for the 2nd set, but we couldn't leave! The band had just got warmed up and us along with them. I'm sure I was hearing tango rhythms and five-four time mixed into the infectious sounds.

My only disappointment was the kitchen's lack of Zane's famous knishes, but the hearty, smoky pea soup was delicious alternative.
